Memorial Day has one purpose — to remember and honor those who died serving their country in the military. The original date was May 30. In 1967, the observance was moved to the last Monday in May. This is one of the few years both dates fall on the same day — Monday, May 30, 2011.
The day was called Decoration Day when it was first held after the Civil War. Now, as Memorial Day, it has broader meaning to include visits to the cemetery to honor deceased family and friends.
Memorial Day is far more than numbers, but they are staggering and add meaning to why we observe it.
